If you’re wracking your brain for ways to spruce up your bed beyond headboards and duvets, look no further. Canopy beds are up and coming and can have a major impact on the look of your bedroom.
The typical canopy bed, called the Lit à Colonnes, features four posts, located on each corner of the bed extending several feet in the air. They support a square frame that can be used to drape a cloth or curtain over to create a tent-like effect. Leave the curtains open and transparent or close them when looking for some solitude. Doing this can make your bed feel like its own little oasis.
While originally made for the conservation of warmth and privacy in medieval times, canopy beds are now known for their luxurious looks. In medieval Europe, canopy beds were showered with intricate carvings, tassels, and thick, sumptuous fabrics. These were considered traditional, Victorian canopies. While Victorian canopies are still a viable option, most canopy beds today take on the tamed down, modern form of a Lit à Colonnes with streamlined, wood or metal posts and simple fabrics.
The addition of a canopy bed gives you more room for creativity, as you can choose whatever color, design, and material of curtain you’d like. If you’re a simple person, and like the all-white look, a translucent white curtain can create a dream-like bedroom. If you have a rustic theme, try out some worn wooden posts with a neutral canvas curtain. If your room is primarily navy blue, go for a cream canopy or another color that compliments it. There are lots of opportunities.
Some even enjoy the look of the posts alone and elect to not use a curtain. The posts, themselves, can instantly heighten a room and make it feel roomier than it is. Curtain-less canopy frames also make for a great place to hang other decorations, such as string lights.
Alternatively, there are canopies that require no posts, so if you’re looking to reach a similar effect for less, try out either a half-tester or a Lit à Couronne. A half-tester is somewhat self-explanatory in that it extends out over half of the bed from the headboard, while the Lit à Couronne has a crown-like feature at the top with draperies stretched down each side of the bed. If you have a little girl, this one would be great as it gives off a princess sensation.
Outdoor canopies are also common on daybeds. Daybeds are usually placed around a pool area and serve as a place of relaxation and comfort on those warm summer days. The canopy aspect provides shade and creates an extra layer of elegance.
With so many beautiful options available, introducing a canopy should be seamless. Alter it to your taste, and find comfort in a new and exciting addition.
