Decorating with Black & White

The versatility of black and white makes it a classic design combination, as it can be mixed with so many trends that come and go. Black and white is such a favorable design, as the proportions of the colors are endless. When thinking of the proportions for black and white, it’s key to remember that it depends on your preference, the light sources that are available in the chosen room, and the function of the room.

Black can absorb light and make a room look smaller, so always try to include reflective surfaces to the room, such as glass or mirrors.

If your room is predominately black and white, bring in a statement piece, like a rug, so that it does not over power the design of the room.

Keeping it to one statement piece is ideal if it is a larger piece; however, several small, bright artifacts work great as well.

Tile Climbs the Walls

Wallpaper, paint, take it down, and put it away. Tile is taking over home design, and it is more versatile than ever. Tile has become thinner and more cost effective, making it easier for you to bring this style into your home.

No room is off limits, and you will quickly see tile not just in the bathroom and kitchen, but now in your bedroom, living room, and hallway. It can be used as a headboard in your bedroom, as an accent wall, or even above your fireplace.

Tiles of different shapes, sizes, and colors all work well together to create an intense look. In the room above, tile is being used not only as an accent wall, but also as a decorative piece, intensifying the artifacts on the chest.

Tile is taking the place of art, as it adds color and interest to your living space. In the bathroom below, you will notice that tile has been used to create a mosaic around a bathroom mirror. With this touch, artwork isn’t necessary on the walls. The mosaic tiling creates an effect that ties the room together completely.

Tile is being made of interesting materials, with dynamic patterns, and some even becoming 3-dimensional. Texture is essentially now coming out of the wall.

Decorating with Plaid

Plaid is often associated with all things cozy and comfortable, and it is being used more frequently in homes, and not just fashion. Plaid is being used in pillows, wall treatments, throws, and textiles. Plaid
throws and pillows can easily dress down any formal space with a touch of warmth and masculinity.

As an accent, you can drape a plaid throw blanket over a bench or chair for an effect that will add instant warmth to your space.

Plaid tablecloths are another easy way to bring the daring style into your dining room. Get creative and switch your lamp shades for a plaid pattern, which offers a unique spin on this style.

A different approach to plaid is to bring it to life on your floors. A checkered pattern, like the Dabbieri Collection’s Cardo, does just that. Decorating your home for the fall doesn’t have to require you to go over the top, spend a lot of money, or completely revamp your rooms. There are endless ways to bring fall into your home, and we’ve compiled several of our favorite ideas.

Leaves aren’t solely there to decorate your yard with when they fall off of your trees. Instead of bagging the leaves, search your yard for fallen branches with bright leaves still attached. If you’re having no luck, trim several branches from a tree, or go to your local crafts store for faux leaves, and bring them inside. Rather than decorating your counter, table, or mantel with a bouquet of flowers, put your branches in a vase for a burst of vibrancy.

Just as leaves and branches aren’t solely reserved for outdoors, the same can be said for festive wreaths. Decorating doors in your home with fall wreaths can add a big punch to the room(s) that the door or wall accentuates. Have fun with your wreaths, and don’t rely on buying the ready
made ones at the store. Go to your local crafts store and purchase  ribbon, letters, floral pieces, and anything else that sticks out to you. Personalize your wreath with the initial of your last name, to give your room a homey feel.

Who says that pumpkins are meant to be carved and set on your front porch, only to be lit at night? Decorating your home with pumpkins is another easy and fun way to bring fall into your home. Choose a room or shelf that you want to decorate with pumpkins, and then get creative. Plain
pumpkins might be best suited for one room, while decorating your pumpkins with ribbons, bows, paint or glitter, might tie together the decorations on the shelf in your dining room.
